Portland is a condo town. That is to say, if you’re in the market for a home but aren’t looking for a single family residence and all the upkeep that goes with it. A condo can seem too confining to some people though.
That’s where townhomes come in. Portland townhouses have many of the advantages of a single family residence but are without some of their downsides. Upkeep can be a big job. With a townhouse, all the exterior upkeep including landscape maintenance is usually cared for by the Home Owner’s Association (HOA). Townhouses are also typically larger than condos and often have an attached garage and room for storage. They also frequently have a private front entry and a backyard patio and/or balcony or a fenced backyard.
This is why townhouses are often referred to as turn-key living. You’ve got all the perks of a single family residence but the house doesn’t need a babysitter and a gardener to take care of it while you’re away. If you want to leave town on little notice, no problem. Just pack and go. Your townhouse will be nicely cared for while you’re away and looking pretty when you come back home again.
There aren’t alot of townhomes in Central Portland. We’ve highlighted a few hear in various price ranges that might catch your eye:

These traditional style two and three story units were built in 2014 and are close to Route 26 in south east Portland making it easy to commute into town. The large back yard is a plus.
Alexis Terrace is clean-cut neighborhood of craftsman style townhouses in southeast Portland. Unlike condos in this price range, you’ll get a one-car garage and (usually) room to park another vehicle in the driveway. Small outdoor spaces are also included.

These outstanding units have soaring 10 foot ceilings, fireplaces, ample space and river and Mt. Saint Helen’s views. Watch the boats on parade outside your window and park your yacht in a private slip and enjoy outings on the water.
Shoreline at Riverscape is another higher end Portland community of townhouses. This modern urban complex is located right on the Willamette River, steps away from the Greenway Trail in the Pearl District. These units have attached two-car garages, custom gourmet style kitchens and river and cityscape views. Shoreline offers buyers a rare opportunity to own a spacious waterfront townhouse within walking distance or a short drive to all the excitement, entertainment, shopping and dining options of Portland’s downtown area.
