Hayden Island is a unique land mass in the center of the Columbia River (the fourth largest river in the U.S.), wedged between the North Portland Harbor to the south and Vancouver, Washington to the north. It’s a serene setting with panoramic views and an enviable habitat for water fowl. Downtown Portland is just 22 miles away on the I-5. So if you’re a nature lover who enjoys or works in the city then Hayden Island condos living might be for you.
Hayden Island is made up of about 1,400 acres, more than half of which is occupied by wetlands, forests and a grain mill to the east of the Columbia River Railroad Bridge. The east side of the island is where you’ll find all the development and approximately 2,500 full-time Portlanders who happily call it home. Six marinas with floating homes dot the east and south side of the island while the Hayden Bay condos occupy the north shore and the land surrounding Hayden Bay.
The Columbia River along the north shore is the widest channel and offers views of the boats, birds, Mt. Saint Helens and Vancouver. Steamboats regularly traversed these waters carrying passengers and cargo. There is still a dinner cruise that travels up the Willamette to Portland and others that ply the Cascade locks and give sightseeing tours of the spectacular Columbia River Gorge. Little wonder then, that the Columbia Point Yacht Club is located in Hayden Bay. Many Hayden Bay condo owners have a boat slip there.
In addition to the allure of the majestic mountains, the mighty waters and ever changing vistas of pristine natural beauty, Hayden Island is close to several golf courses in North Portland. So if you like to hit the links, you’ve got choices. Portland’s International Airport is also just a few miles away making it easy to take those longer trips. Many residents take the short commute to Vancouver for a day of shopping, trying out a new restaurant or spending a weekend away. With all these options, island fever is never a problem.
If these features are ringing your bells, here are a few Hayden Island condos to consider.
Columbia Point West
The three-story contemporary condo community of Columbia Point West is located on North Hayden Bay Drive adjacent to Hayden Bay to the west. They are one and two bedroom flats with fireplaces and tiered open balconies for a wide open feel and the most expansive water and mountain views. Amenities include an indoor and outdoor pool, spa and fitness center. Boat slips may be available at the yacht club.
Jantzen Beach Village
The condos at Jantzen Beach Village are mid-century modern one and two bedroom units that come in one and two-story floor plans. They’re not on a beach and few, if any, have views but they’re adjacent to an area on the island’s south side known as Jantzen Beach and Lotus Island Park, right across from Hayden Bay. This complex has a garden setting, community pool and clubhouse. Walk to the water from your door.
Waterside
Built in 2006, the midrise community of Waterside is one of the newest on Hayden Island and the most spacious. This four-story complex is built around two well-manicured waterfront courtyards with views of the Columbia River, Mt. Saint Helens and Vancouver. Tall ceilings, open floor plans, gas fireplaces, hardwood floors and private decks make these highly desirable. Residents also have under-building parking.
